Windows 10 Kills USB 3.0 Only Works 2.0

I did an in-place upgrade from Windows 8.1 X64 to Windows 10 Pro X64 and the USB 3.0 support for the 5D stopped working. Moved it to a 2.0 port and it works.

Any fixes?

You have to see if the manufacturer of your USB 3.0 chip on the motherboard has the latest drivers to support Windows 10. You might have to wait for an update for it.

You should definitely ensure you have the latest USB drivers for your motherboard. We have tested the Drobo 5D in-house and did not encounter any issue with Drobo & Windows 10. If this continues to be an issue for you and you have checked everything please contact support.

This exact thing just happened to me. (April 2016) Windows said that my drivers were up to date so I ordered a new PCI-Express USB3.0 card from Amazon… their most popular one… installed it with the drivers supplied… still doesn’t work in USB 3.0 slot. Works fine in USB 2.0. My older Drobo S works fine in the USB 3.0 slot.

RickLeePhoto,
Would you double check and see if you have the latest drivers for your Drobo 5D:

We did resolve some issues with USB.

DroboMod

RickLeePhoto. Same issue with me. Upgraded to Windows 10 and had spotty connection to the 3.0 USB ports on my PC. Updated to latest firmware for Drobo 5D and for Dashboard. Works fine in 2.0 port. Tried different ports in 3.0 and will not connect. Gets an unrecognized device. Cannot call anymore as my service warranty period is over. This is my 4th Drobo unit. My other Drobo I had to send back after similar problems with Windows 8. Tried replacing cable. No luck. Received a refurb or my old unit back after repairs and it worked. But it is USB 2.0 and I move a lot of data that takes half a day to a day. When 3.0 was working on my 5D I was in heaven. Tired of searching for cures. Please help. My PC is newer, has all the patches/updates, running Windows 10, etc. No other issues with any other devices in my USB 3.0 ports.

hi redlead,
can i check if you have tried to fullow shutdown the drobo via dashboard, and then to power all down and wait 5 minutes, and then to unplug the power and usb cables from drobo.

and then if you power up the drobo on its own first (it shoudl boot up and go back into standby mode)
and then to power up the computer and once that is running
to try connecting it to the drobo
does your drobo wake up shortly after in usb 3 again and become recognised in dashboard and by the computer?

I did as you suggested. Now it is not detected in either 2.0 or 3.0 USB ports.

USB Device Not Recognized after a while. No abnormal lights on the front of the Drobo unit.

Edit: now it is recognized in USB 2.0 again. But not 3.0.

ok thanks for trying that test,

(if it’s any consolation, i still have some niggles with the usb3 cable that came with my 5D, though that particular cable had an extremely tight fitting that would not slot into the connector properly, so i currently use another cable that came with the drobo-s-gen2 until i pop to the shops and get one, as i think it was a physical cable issue rather than drivers etc)

Hi folks,
I’m wondering if there have been any significant solutions found to this issue. I’m having a similar, but not precisely the same problem. On my Windows 10 machine, using a Gen 3 (four bay) Drobo, it is not an issue of windows not finding the Drobo when using USB 3.0, but when plugged in, the USB 3.0 driver breaks completely and becomes non-functional for anything. I have to uninstall the driver, and reboot the system to get the USB 3 ports back. If I plug the Drobo in again, the problem re-occurs. Everything is as up to date as I can make it: Drobo Firmware v. 3.2.2[11.35.77951]; Dashboard: 2.8.1 [80644]; Renesas USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0.96 (Microsoft) v. 10.0.10586.212 with driver USB xHCI Compliant Host Controller.

Any solutions would be welcome!

Check for other USB devices that might be conflicting with the USB bus on your system. Unplug them one at a time, and retest.

Thanks for the reply DSLAM. There are no other USB devices connected. The issue is entirely unique to the DROBO. Any other thoughts?

hi thomas, i was wondering if there are any settings regarding power usage that you could check in control panel, just in case something looks as though it might be conflicting in some way?

i seem to remember another user who found some usb power saving options that were enabled.

another thing that would be interesting to try, would be to shut all down, and then to restart the computer 1st and when it is at the login prompt (assuming it loads in a similar way to older windows) to try powering on the drobo at this time, and then once the drobo is up and running after its blue led sequence, only then to log in… this is not the ideal way to connect it but this is just as a test.

edit: i should also add that i did this for one of my drobos when i had some connection issues recently and it seemed to fix a problem for me.
