Drobo

What happens if the Drobo base unit fails?

I don’t know if this is the right place to ask but I would appreciate any help.

I have a 4-bay Drobo (Gen-2, purchased the year it appeared) and it has my Home folder on it (OS X 10.6.8). It is running well but since it is getting old, I am getting worried…

What happens if a 4-bay Drobo unit itself fails, do you loose all data on the 4 HDs? Can you buy another 4-bay Drobo and place your HDs in it without loosing your data? Where can I find more info on this issue?

Thanks,
Mike

What happens to the passengers when an auto fails?

When your Drobo eventually fails, it will probably leave the drives intact and ready to go into another Drobo.
If your Drobo controller chip dies horribly and garbles data, or thinks the drives are pink elephants, expect to lose data.

Of course, Sod’s Law says that if you don’t have backups, then your Drobo will melt a hole in the floor and take your disks with it. Plan ahead and you’ll be fine.
