A few weeks back my drobo lost connection to my computer while I was moving music files from the drobo to another location. I rebooted the drobo and my computer at the time and deleted the files that I was moving from the drobo. Since then when windows loads Im prompted with a window to scan the drobo as there appears to be errors on it. Ive tried this along with running elevated chkdsk /f through prompt but just cant seem to clean the indexes. I keep getting a note that chkdsk is deleting orphan file record segment 7416 and then after checking indexes it gives a message ‘Scanning unindexed files for reconnect to their original directory. Recovering orphaned file *.mp3 (17056) into directory file 17051’ whereupon chkdsk hangs. Ive left it for 2 days and still nothing. Anyone have any ideas on what I can do here? Much appreciated.
What OS are you running the Chkdsk on?
Also, you should temporarily disable real-time file-scanning on your antivirus program to avoid additional slowdown.

Im running chkdsk from windows 7 home premium system. Im using MS security essentials for AV/spyware and real time was turned off. Included text output below. I have tried to recreate the mp3 in the correct directory is was in before I deleted it but it just will not work. I also emptied the trash just after this happened so I cant just recover the file. Any help appreciated!

I’ve had mixed results running Chkdsk on Win 7, but in all cases it completes to the summary display (# of bad blocks, etc), just sometimes it doesn’t return to the command prompt.
Your Chkdsk output looks like a normal run, though I’m uncertain why it’s not completing (at least to the summary screen).
You could try CHKDSK /I (less-vigorous check of indexes) to see if it completes successfully.
If that doesn’t work, try backing up the directory with the problem file in it, deleting it, and copying it back.
Worst case, a full backup/restore might be necessary, but I’ve only had to resort to that once because I somehow really screwed up my MFT.
Just remember, NEVER run CHKDSK /R or CHKDSK /B on a Drobo (or any device that does not have a 1:1 correspondence between logical blocks and physical blocks)!

I may not have explained well enough above but the offending file is deleted but it is still coming up with this record. Thanks for the reminder about /r and /b. I guess there is no way to rebuild an MFT

Give CHKDSK /I /F a shot.
Sounds like somehow the deleted file is orphaned or somehow not-quite-fully-deleted.
If you’re VERY adventurous and have a verified full backup, you can try Runtime’s Disk Explorer. I once had a problem with a particular MFT file number problem and at least I could determine what the offending file was (in my case only the file index was listed, not the filename). Unfortunately I still couldn’t repair the issue, so I ended up reformatting and restoring from backup.
I hope you can get it fixed! Backup/Restore is time-consuming at best…

I was thinking that the only option now would be the same as you are proposing, backup, format the drobo and restore since Im not very adventurous…with my data I mean. Thanks for the help.
Bummer. If you can afford the time, I’d let it go for 72-96 hours (3-4 days) and see it completes. I’ve had Chkdsk take AGES to complete successfully…
If that doesn’t work then yeah… backup, reformat and restore is the cleanest way to address the issue.
Oh, check your memory utilization. When I had the MFT problem, Chkdsk took MASSIVE amounts of memory. 
When I run error check through windows rather than chkdsk through prompt the explorer.exe process takes up ~1gb of mem, i only have 2gb total. Itand goes up and down around that limit, it appears as though its doing something. Also the CPU usage goes from 10% up to 95% at regular intervals in task manager. It’s like it’s locked in a loop. I’ll try to let it go through the wknd. Thanks again.
FYI as an update, I just bought a new pc (Gateway 4860 EF31P) and tried attaching Drobo and chkdsk’ing to no avail. Got the same hanging going on, thats with i5 proc and 6 GB RAM, win7 64bit both through win explorer interface and through command line.
I now believe my old pc had usb 2 probs, I bought an add in card years ago to add usb2 (yeah that pc was that old) . The new pc has data transfer rates way above what I was getting with the Drobo using usb2 on the old one.
I decided to copy the data off the Drobo to an another external backup drive, format the Drobo and then copy the data back. Hopefully that will get rid of these unindexed file errors. Thanks for the help Bhiga,
