Jumping in and running the Drobo without a look at the manual first has left me unable to backup several selected external drives om my iMac. I do use Tome Machine but am looking for a backup to the backup. Is there any way to format a Drobo volume for OSX without clobbering everything on the five 2TB drives in use?
Recommendations for the best PC backup software. The PC Backup that comes with Drobo is actually pretty good. But backing up everything all the time is a waste since a large portion is archieve stuff that will seldom change.
I’ve changed many of the PC folders to Special Folders so I can set them for the longest period between backup - 30 days.
But any sub-directories are forced to take the same settings which can be inappropriate for that folder.
For example, my D:\My Documents folder is sub-divided into maybe 15 directories - some active and some archieve. To keep the active one’s backed up up I have to use hourly backup up for the entire main directory which also does an hourly on the archieve stuff.
I fully admit I may be just setting everything wrong but that seems to be my understanding of how this works.
Your item 2 suggests you have a Windows machine? If so, try SecondCopy. Microsoft also has something similar (for free) called SyncToy. I use SecondCopy. It will copy only changed files so a check of a modest size file structure is very quick. As a benefit it will backup anything moved to the archive without you needing to remember to refresh that set of folders.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.
I have two systems: one is Win7 and the other is an iMac 27" I7 (w/Lion)
Most text/numbers/email is done on the PC. Almost all graphics/design/layout is on the iMac.
I’ll probably jump between the two forever since each has its strengths and weaknesses.
I use SyncToy a lot but would rather automate as much of this as possible.
I’ll look at SecondCopy. I’l like to also keep a backup of Time Machine. I use SuperDuper to an external drive but would like to get everything to the Drobo, but that wasn’t formatted for OSX when I first installed it. Is there any way to OSX one Drobo volume without affecting the others?
I can see the Drobo using the Mac Drobo Dashboard but Drobo Copy doesn’t work.
Thanks.[hr]

Suggestions on #1 and #2 are very appreciated.

I have exactly the same situation. I am new to MAC but have been learning …WHat I did and now my timemachine is working to backup my MAC files to it’s own subdirectory on the drobo-fs and drobo-backup handles the files on my windows machines.
Simply download and install drobo desktop onto your mac and when you install it, the process will have you create your own subdirectory. Once done, timemachine will see that directory and you can start using Time Machine app
