Remove Capacity

According to Drobo, you can remove a drive and it will remove capacity (assuming you have extra space)

http://dashboardhelp.drobo.com/guide/210/en/FS_Removing_Capacity_or_Drives.htm

I have a Drobo FS Frimware 1.2.4 [4.37.51655]

I have 2x2 3x3 TB drives (9TB usable, 4TB used)

When I removed one of the 3 TB drives I get the RED “data not protected”, the capacity goes down to 6.3 TB total 4TB used.

After letting it sit for 6 hrs, I expected that the data would be moved around and I would get protection again. I still have 4 green drives and 1 “add a drive”

The website says " Remove only one drive at a time while your Drobo device is powered on, giving your Drobo device the opportunity afterwards to rearrange your data into the safest configuration across the remaining hard drives."

Any thoughts?

If I recall correctly, data relayout on those devices takes about a day per terabyte (the 5N should be significantly faster); it stands to reason that you had about 1TB of data on that drive that now has to be reconstructed on the remaining drives, so give it until late tomorrow at least.

Ok. Thanks… Suggestion for Drobo… Make lights do ~something~ if moving data around. I will wait around…

I SSH’d to the box and I don’t see any activity. and load is really low for doing any data movement.

It’s not commonly known, but the networked Drobo’s run two operating systems. Linux is only there for file sharing and such (think of it as an integrated DroboShare and you’re not far off). The diskpack and BeyondRAID is managed by the same OS that runs their desktop units (I want to say it was vxWorks) on the other CPU core. You won’t see any activity on the Linux side when BeyondRAID is doing its thing.

I’m confused by the steady green lights. Shouldn’t the DroboFS indicate that it’s rebuilding from the “failed” disk?

If you have 4 green lights and one “add drive here” light then Drobo is (or at least thinks it is) finished and in a normal state.

The lights blink between green and yellow/orange when Drobo is rebuilding.

What does Drobo Dashboard tell you the current status is?

Drobo dashboard still says “add drive” , Drobo cannot protect your data against hard drive failures… (etc).

I never saw it blink lights at all when I removed the drive. Instantly came up with the red “add drive” light… Before I removed the drive, all 5 bays were solid green.

Mine finally went all green last night…so, it took a little over 3 days for only 3.4 TB of Data…So, I am guessing that (1day per TB is correct)[hr]
PS

it took my droboFS about a day to change from ALL Green & 1 Red - to “Data Protection” and rebuild status (Green/ Yellow flash)

Mine isn’t flashing anything though… :frowning: And no message about rebuilding either…

Basically I am doing the same thing between Drobo FS and 5N…

When did you remove the drive? Like i said, i noticed it took about a day(maybe more) to even start flashing and start the data rebuild…

I think you just have to wait it out…and a little prayer wont hurt…lol

It sounds like the Drobo thinks there isn’t enough space on the drive pack to start the relayout, so it’s asking for more capacity. This can sometimes happen if you’ve recently deleted a lot of data and the Drobo hasn’t had enough time to reclaim that space. Try a quick restart from Drobo Dashboard; if it still doesn’t start relayout, please contact our support desk at http://www.drobo.com/support/contact-support.php.

Nice… After over a day of waiting, a power cycle, tossing in a 320 gig drive, waiting 2 more days… I finally get the “rebuilding” lights and the dashboard says rebuilding… 60 hours to go, but at least it is finally doing something… Boy the DroboFS does take its time to do anything…Thankfully the 5N is much faster…
