Red Alert. Drobo is critically low on capacity

Hi Guys,

We have a drobo B1200i. It’s critically low on capacity. It’s currently set up with 9 3TB drives, but reaching maximum capacity. Can we replace the critical 3TB drive with another drive (4TB) to increase capacity? Would that affect the current RAID setup?

If the Drobo is in a stable state and the data accessible it is okay to replace a drive.

Keep in mind that the largest size drive is used for redundancy

I assume that your B1200i is setup as follow:

9x 3TB HDD, and 3x SDD (Data Tiering)

  1. If you B1200i is set to SDR (Single Disk Redundancy) - You will need to swap in at least 2x 4TB drives to effectively increase the total disk space.

  2. If you B1200i is set to DDR (Dual Disk Redundancy) - You will need to swap in at least 3x 4TB drives to effectively increase the total disk space.

Only ever replace one drive at a time and wait for the rebuild to complete before replacing the next. Be prepared to wait several days for each stage to complete.

hi, its usualy about 1 day per TB of data to rebuild on 4-5slot drobos, though your model might be a bit quicker (depending on how many users are using it at the time) but please feel free to keep us updated with how it goes.
