Question about an (older) B800i iSCSI device - IP Address confusion

According to the manual for this B800i device - B800i_GSG_Rev02_US.pdf - under the configuration options, it says:

Directly connect your Drobo B800i via one of its iSCSI (Ethernet) ports to your computer’s Ethernet port for optimal performance. In this configuration, you do not need to set a static IP address for that port.

… how does not assigning an IP Address work? iSCIS ( from what I’ve read / been told ) runs over a TCP/IP connection… I have gotten this to work assiging ip address to the server and device… but how is this supposed to work as documented… " In this configuration, you do not need to set a static IP address for that port." - that confuses me.
