I’m interested in getting a 8 or 12 bay drobo from the Bxxx range but this is new to me in that presumably i connect this to my Apple airport extreme via ethernet?
can anyone comment on speeds?
is there a way I can control privacy so only one computer can access that drobo?
Thanks a lot, sorry these are really noob questions
Hi Musio: Speeds or lack of it, drobo including the 5D, 5N & our top of the line B1200i, is not fast at all but the ease of administration, mix & match capacities, speeds & manufacturers, Auto Storage Tiering etc. made up that deficiency. Hope that answered ur 1).
2) For B800 & 1200i, you could only use them as a DAS (Direct Attached Storage) via iSCSI. The B800fs is a NAS (Network Attached Storage). For the B800i & B1200i, iSCSI provides CHAP ( Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol) to enable the host w/ an iSCSI initiator connected to the target(s) (i.e. LUN=Logical Units or Drobo’s term known as Smart Volumes). Please bear in mind only one host can be connected to a smart volume at one time.

I’m running an iMac and i read iSCSI is a little flakey… but here is where i’m finding out more. I hoped I could connect a unit and it would work much like the same way a consumer Drobo works but with more drive bays. Has anyone any experience of connecting a 8/12 bay Drobo to their iMac? What type of speeds are you getting?
I’ve got a stack of 12 drives and no party to go to!
iSCSI is not flakey! In fact, many Enterprises & SMBs around the globe have already adopted & deployed iSCSI SAN and iSCSI SAN is, arguable but IMO that’s the trend or de facto IT storage standard. I have a hand full of Enterprise customers already testing 40GigabaseE (Yes, copper direct attached!).
The B1200i is an expensive proposition. Unless you need SSD/SAS/SATA & Auto Storage Tiering, I recommend you go for qty 2 B800i or B800fs. That’s 6 more drive bays than the B1200i and a lot quiet. That B1200i is very noisy whereas the B800i/B800fs is exceptionally quiet.
