Need to remove Unallocated Space

Hello,

on my Drobo Pro I have 1.88 TB Unallocated Space.
I really need that Space!.
I understand that came when I started initially setting the Maximum Capacity to 16 TB.
Now I have mixed drive capacities up to 4TB per drive.
I also understand, the only way to fix this is reformat all hdds and set to capacity to a higher level…? Is this correct?
If so, what level should I set it?
Since there are 8 bays and 8 TB drives are in the near future should I set it to 64 TB?
Till now I don’t understand the meaning of setting the Max before I even use the drives.
I now painfully spread all data (14.84 TB ) off my Drobo Pro to all my other disks where I have little space left!

Any advice will be very appreciated!

hi, would you be able to take some screenshots of your dashboard tabs, to capture the drive slot info and volumes areas, and to upload to imgur or similar with links pasted here? (if you do though, please remember to rub out any sensitive/serial numbers before uploading to play safe)

when you mention mixed drives up to 4TB, part of me is thinking something could be releated to the amount of drives of a certain size in conjuction with you using DDR?

(just also linking to your other page here in case related)

Paul, Thanks for trying to help me on that!
I have never used imur, but I hope you can access the pics.

thanks the link worked fine

just as a question, can you confirm if the dashboad options are showing DDR (dual drive redundancy) ticked, or not enabled?

no its not… it is even grayed out and also the “spin down” is not selected

thanks for the confirmation,

you seem to be using the latest firmware version as mentioned here, so it’s probably not firmware related:

if you set up your max size per volume (to 16TB), when you first setup the drobo, and later on upgraded or added in more drives (increasing your overall capacity), can you remember if a popup appeared (from dashboard) to ask you to setup a 2nd volume?

(im not 100% sure what the MAX total unit capacity is for the drobo pro, or how many volume is can have, but if you did see a message like that previously, (and chose not to set it up) then maybe rebooting dashboard (or the drobo and computer and then relaunching dashboard could help to bring that popup back up for you?)[hr]
just found it

(by the way, if you did want to have DDR in future, i think that option will become available for you once there is enough free space to allow the size of your 2nd largest drive, approximately, for use with DDR… but another user recently was not able to switch back to sdr and re-enable DDR a 2nd time, until they freed up a lot of space)

Hi Paul,

I tried to create an other volume but somehow it did not accept it. Now I also understand the 1.8 TB unallocated space. On the desktop icon it says : 17.59 TB. I don’t want to re adjust too much considering, that this model is already out off support. I just received a new one-the 3rd gen Drobo, where I will a copy of my files. Just in case.
Thank you very much for your advice.

ok sure, thanks and if you have any queries later on with the gen3 please feel free to make another post and one of us can try and help

As the ever-helpful Paul already explained, that “Unallocated Space” is just space that the Drobo already has, but you didn’t assign yet to a partition. It’s there waiting for you!
I’ll clarify something that is different between DroboPro and regular Drobos. DroboPro doesn’t prompt you to create a new volume to use extra space. You must create the partition yourself. Also unlike smaller Drobos, a DroboPro lets you create partitions of varying sizes. For example, you already have a 16TB partition. Your next partition could be 16TB, or it could be 4TB, or whatever.
So, you have done everything right so far, and the solution will be very simple. No need to move data off or anything of the sort. Just create a new partition and reboot your DroboPro. (Yup, full restart. The kind that takes a few minutes. Don’t panic when this happens.)

I own a happy DroboPro with partitions of 2TB, 2TB, and 4TB.

thanks for the last post rdo and for all the extra info about the differences - very useful indeed
