I’m considering moving from a 5N to a 5D (5N too slow). If I buy a 5D with no drives, can I simply move the drives over from the 5N or do they need to be formatted differently?

the way the 5D and 5N format their drives is different
at best the 5D will simply reject your disk pack
at worst it may not recognize your disk pack and may wipe it without warning
Since the Drobo 5N is a NAS device (linux based) you will not be able to migrate drives to 5D ( direct attached device ) since this specifically formats to HFS or NTFS. You can attach each device and copy the data over.
