move 1 drive between 2 drobo 5n s

I have two 5n’

Drobo 1 was low on space so I replaced a 4TB WD red with a 6TB WD red. All went well

I then replaced a 3TB WD green on Drobo 2 with the WD red previously removed from Drobo 1. I got all red leds and a message saying drive not recognised.

I tried formatting the 4TB WD red in windows then reinserting into Drobo 2 but got the same result

How do I prepare the disk for reuse in the second Drobo

hi beano,
if your 1st drobo 5n, is all ok, then when you get a chance could you post back with full details of your 2nd drobo 5n please?

eg, what drives does it have,
what was the status of each light just prior to the swap
which firmware is it on,
which dashboard are you using
and if the power was on when you removed the 3tb and also when you put the 4tb replacement inside?

thanks

There is nothing special you need to do to have this drive recognized. How long did you leave it in the slot before you removed it. In some cases the data protection mode may take several minutes before it starts.

DroboMod

5N No2 has a 6TB WDRed a 4TB WDRed 2X3TB WDReds and a 3TB WDGreen from top to bottom

All Lights Were Green

Fimware is 3.2.3 On both drobos

Drobo Dashboard 2.6.9

I powered down both drobos before removing old and inserting replacement drives[hr]

DroboMod

after inserting the previously used 4TB WDRed I powered on got all green leds
blue leds started to run from the outside in

then blue leds started to run from left to right and staying lit when reaching the right hand side after getting to the halfway point all green leds turned red and blue leds went off and got the message

“Drobo doesn’t recognize some of the drives you have installed in the data bays. They may have been previously formatted by Drobo or are from another Drobo”

After that I shutdown, removed the drive, formatted it as ntfs, reinserted, powered up and got the same message.

after reading your reply I tried again and so far it’s been about half an hour, and they are still on red

If I put back the WDGreen then everything starts up normally.

Your mistake was to power down before swapping the drives. The Drobo needs to detect that you’ve first removed a drive and then inserted a different one, so leave it powered up.

That Worked drive is recognised and in repair mode (flashing green/amber)

Thank You

I’m glad that helped. You already know, of course, to let it get on with rebuilding without interfering with it too much.[hr]
I think the way you had it before, the Drobo was trying to protect you from your own actions. Powering it up with components from two different valid disk packs didn’t do what you expected. Instead, it did what you might hope it would do if you got two disk packs mixed up with each other.

nice one, hopefully things will be all fine again in a few days (or approx 1 day per 1tb of data that you have on the drobo)
