I previously only used my drobo mini on an old Windows XP pc. I virtualized the XP machine into a VMware virtual machine & copied it to my drobo mini which is formatted NTFS.
I have a new mac mini which I am going to use to run the XP virtual machine periodically off of the drobo mini as needed with VM ware Fusion.
Will the mac mini be able to connect to and use the NTFS formatted Drobo mini? Or should I:
- Copy the XP virtual machine to the mac mini first & then reformat the drobo mini to HFS & then copy the XP virtual machine back to the HFS drobo mini?
- Should I try to get the mac mini to use the NTFS formated drobo mini? I heard that OSX can read NTFS but that in only allows writing to NTFS after a non-trivial system setting change (third party software can apparently automates this).
Can anyone recommend software for this?
Please note that I will be getting rid of the physical XP machine. I have no issue reformatting the Drobo mini to HFS except that two thoughts come to mind. First I wonder if all of this copying of the 143GB XP virtual machine will introduce errors into it. Second, the drobo mini is portable & it would be nice to maintain the option of bringing it into the office if the need ever arose again. The office is all windows except for an iPad & I do not think it will be able to access a Drobo mini formatted to HFS from one of the windows 7 worksations.
I also will be running other virtual machines from the mac min including a Windows 7 or 10 machine if that will make a difference.
Also will the Drobo mini be faster if I connect it to the mac mini with the lightning port or the USB 3.0 port?
