Dashboard said something about rebuilding. About a minute later, and I was back to four green lights, as if nothing had happened.
Should I do anything about this?

drobo can do a quick verify, just to check that the drive isnt out of sync, before it adds it back into the disk pack
so it didnt have to actually rebuild the drive that had the issue, it just made sure it was all ok before adding it back to your pack, hence the 60 second “rebuild” you saw
Try removing and firmly re-seating the drives. I resolved a similar problem the same way, with my then very new Drobo S, and it never recurred. A lot of people have had the same experience and reported it here.
(should that reseating all be done once a drobo/connection is fully powered down though)?

Paul, if you are asking a question, then… yea, I shut mine down, removed the drives and re-inserted them, this time giving them a little extra push after the latches engaged. And I try to remember to do that extra push each time I insert a drive for any reason (which is not very often).
I don’t know if it would help or hurt to do that on a running system. Especially if it were in the middle of a rebuild that is suspected to possibly be due to a mis-engaged drive. But I’m just very conservative about my data and “messing” with live electrical connections in computers.

I’ve always wished that you could instruct the Drobo to stop using a specific drive, for use when you plan to replace/upgrade a drive. It would behave as if the drive had failed, and rebuild the data on the remaining drives. When this completes, it would give you the choice of removing the drive, or putting it back into production.
I’ve had this facility on RAID cards, and it takes all the stress out of drive changes.
It also maintains 100% availability, and (as long as it powers off the specific drive) prevents damage to the drive you remove (coriolis effects)

On a more technical issue… one of my drives failed. I keep a spare drive, so I swapped it in. I put the old drive in the caddy on my desk, and as it powered up, it emitted “scuffing” sounds, about 4 per second for about three seconds. My first thought was that the heads were colliding with the platters, but the repetition rate was far too slow for a drive which was spinning, and the rate would accelerate rapidly if the drive were spinning up.
So, that leaves the seek mechanism as the only other moving part, doesn’t it?
Even though the drive has no data on it, I get the scuffing sounds a few times a day. It will be interesting to see how it gets on. I’ll put some data on it once the Drobo finishes rebuilding.
What model drive failed? Does the SMART data show anything irregular?
It’s a Samsung HD154UI and the SMART data shows nothing unusual, though I’ve only just installed SpeedFan (4.47) in order to be able to see the SMART data, and I’m not sure I’m seeing all there is. It has an option to run Short/Extended tests, but it hung during the short test, then had to do a reset to recover. I’ll play with the drive until I get a replacement.
You might want to download and run Samsung’s disk diagnostic program. That would always be the “official test” and if it’s still under warranty it might help speed the process.
