Enable TimeMachine without Drobo Dashboard?

Is there a way to enable TimeMachine Backup without the use of Drobo Dashboard?

Something strange I noticed. Yesterday it was possible to make a TM-Backup also on shares wich were not enabled for TM in the Dashboard?

How is this possible? I think TM can not backup on “normal” network shares?

You can use Time Machine with pretty much anything: http://lifehacker.com/tag/time-machine/

Hi Ricardo,

thanks for this link. I know this steps but I wonder that it works because I only pasted the line “defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1” in the terminal and i t works.

What does the Drobo Dashboard for TM to work?

I think it creates the sparsebundle for you, and it presents itself as an AFP share, which is the protocol preferred by Macs.

No, a sparsebundle I can not see.

Maybe it activates AFP on the drobo? I think TM works with afp, or doesn´t it?

Funny, it did create the sparse bundle for me.

And yeah, I think TM only supports AFP by default, and you can override the behavior using the line you mentioned.
