Would appreciate some help or thoughts. My Drobo FS filled up to 100% capacity and stopped mounting. It would start up and give the message “almost there” but ultimately then say there was an “internal error” and “mount failed.”
I called tech support, who told me I should run the disk repair, but because my Drobo FS was more than 95% filled, I had to first buy a bigger drive, pop it in and let it finish the relayout.
I did this and after eight hours in relayout, the Drobo FS dropped down to 83% of capacity filled.
Rebooted the Drobo FS. However, the disk repair function disappeared after I rebooted, yet the mount still failed and still said there was an “internal error.” During the startup process, the Drobo FS correctly showed 83% capacity but then dropped down to 0% once the mount failed. The drive also remains inaccessible in Finder.
Tech support has told me there is another system or process working in the background that requires the Drobo FS to be left on for 2-3 days after coming down from 100% capacity before it will be able to mount again. Something about data stripes and reclaiming data. Does any of this sound right to you? Hope I’m not just leaving the Drobo FS on doing nothing.
hi it might be still carrying out a rebuild / relayout of data
i dont know how things work on an FS model, but i have 2 experiences of such a process on a drobo 4-slot model, where the relayout/rebuild took 4days 1 hour for me approx. then everything was fine.
if support mentioned the system needs time to finisn its processing process, i’d follow their advice
Yes, in BeyondRAID, space freed from deleting items is not immediately reclaimed. There’s a garbage collection process that trails behind.
You can see this in the capacity lights if you do a large delete. The capacity won’t update until later. If it’s a super-large delete, it can take hours.
The lights don’t blink for garbage collection, so short of the actual space showing up in Dashboard and capacity lights, it’s a silent process.
So whenever possible, let Drobo “catch up” after doing a large delete, especially if you’re low on free space.
You don’t want to end up in the situation where you should have free space because the OS-used space is less than the available space, but Drobo’s free space reclamation (garbage cleanup) hasn’t caught up yet. This a confusing situation for Drobo where you’re trying to “overdraw” on the available storage, even though more should be available.
You can think of it like your checking account where deposited funds may be held.
It’s Monday.
I have $100 in my checking account.
I deposit $200. The bank holds my funds availability for 2 days. (So funds aren’t available until Wednesday).
I write a $250 check to my friend on Tuesday.
My friend cashes my check on Tuesday.
My friend is told I have insufficient funds.
Why?
I should have $300 available, but because the bank is holding my deposit until Wednesday, I still only have $100 immediately available on Tuesday.
Had my friend waited until Wednesday to cash my check, I would have had all $300 immediately available and everything would be fine.
@Bhiga: so I guess what tech support is saying is that because the Drobo FS was previously 100% full and now that I’ve added a new drive to make it 83% only full, I still need to wait 2-3 days for the 17% free space to be reclaimed before it will mount properly? And there won’t be any physical sign of blinking lights to know this is happening?

You didn’t even have the basic decency to wait a week, while we speculate ever more wildly?

The behavior I described does apply to client-based deletes.
I’m not entirely sure how Drobo handles blocks that it itself frees (from its own data-shuffling, rather than client-based filesystem changes) so who knows…
A very interesting solution… Not sure how a firmware re-flash would fix things. Perhaps some internal logs or something were clogging things up. Regardless, the proof is in the pudding! Mmm… pudding…

folder in use.
= approx 10 seconds for dashboard to release 0.03TB
= approx 10 seconds for dashboard to show (0.06TB freed up)
= approx 10 seconds for my computer to show the increase in Free Space (manual f5 refresh)
