Drobo Bricked? Out of warranty? Read me!

Hello Friends,

I’m sorry to hear that you ended up in a sticky situation like I had previously. The good news is, I have some directions that might be able to help you!

Disclaimer: I am providing these instructions as-is with no warranty. Following these directions will likely void your warranty and should only be followed as a last resort. These instructions will require precise hand movements, small tools, and some technical knowledge (especially in linux). These instructions are not complete and written by memory because I did not want to leave my expensive toy open for any longer than I had to. If you want to volunteer your time to help complete these instructions, please do by all means. :slight_smile:

So now down to the story. I decided to downgrade my firmware in order to try to get my mSATA port working (Great idea, right? No.) and ended up with a Drobo in a state where it would fully boot and drives would set up/format/etc, but Drobo would never become accessible over the network despite having an IP. I was able to confirm this by running a ping and an nmap:

As you can see, it is not finding any ports listening. Great thing the only way it is accessible is via network, right? Close, but not quite. Read on to find out what I mean…

So before you proceed… be sure to READ ALL THE KBS. This is a last resort when you end up with a faulty Drobo because of the underlying OS that renders the device unreachable. I’d also suggest running an nmap before proceeding to make sure it’s not listing for connections. If it is, YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO THIS.

So assuming you have read my disclaimers, all the KBs, and found that this bugger is just not listening, I’m going to teach you how to get to the console.

Things you’ll need:

  • USB to Serial TTL cable (http://www.amazon.com/JBtek®-WINDOWS-Supported-Raspberry-Programming/dp/B00QT7LQ88)
  • Philips Head Screwdrivers (standard big head and small head will do)
  • Tiny Flat head (think the size you use on small electronics… this is optionally used to pry up the power button cable and the fan cable without pulling on the wires)
  • Windows Computer (might work on Mac… I never got it to) with PuTTY

Instructions

  1. Shut down Drobo and remove all drives.
  2. Unplug Drobo from all wires.
  3. Remove all 4 rubber feet with large Philips head.
  4. Remove cover from mSATA port.
  5. Remove metal covering from Drobo body (hint: gently pull apart while drobo is facing with the back side down).
  6. Gently remove back cover by depressing the tabs and pulling off.
  7. Gently remove the front cover/drive bay by depressing the tabs and pulling straight out.
  8. Remove the rubber “washer thing” from the front and sit to the side.
  9. Remove 4 screws on each side with the small philips head.
  10. Pull metal top/back STRAIGHT backwards. This requires some effort so don’t be afraid to put some in. Be careful as you get to the end because there are two wires that need unplugged.
  11. Use your tiny flat head to unplug the fan plug and power plug.
  12. Pull the top/back rest of the way off
  13. Unplug battery and remove vertical SATA board
  14. Remove metal coverings with the four connecting screws and pull up. You should see something like this:
  15. Plug in your serial connector as shown above
  16. Re-plug in SATA board and battery
  17. Place the back/top halfway back on so that you can plug the power button back in (the fan isn’t necessary at this point.
    — Reverse these directions to put back together —

Now that all that is done, here is the fun.

  1. Open PuTTY on your windows machine and plug in the usb to serial connector.
  2. Open up your device manager and see what COM port your usb adapter is (e.g. COM3).
  3. Choose serial on PuTTY and put that port where is says COM1. For the baud put 115200.
  4. Plug in the power and network to your Drobo and power on.

Now you wait. Your Drobo will seemingly “halfway boot” before you see anything. If you don’t see anything in the console, you probably did something wrong. Once it boots up… use it like SSH and fix your problem. Assuming your Drobo isn’t listening to anything, the process nasd likely isn’t running. Try starting that up and your Drobo will likely appear 30 seconds later in Dashboard. Then use dashboard to reflash your firmware.

Assuming all went well… you now have turned your paperweight back into a drobo.

Hopefully you found this helpful and hopefully Drobo staff does not remove this (we need this after all to fix your messes). I don’t promise to have any helpful information, but feel free to ask questions of me or anyone else here.

while its nice that you posted a guide, i was just wondering 2 things if you get a moment l33t…

  • when you mention reflash the firmware, did you reflash the same ‘downgraded’ version, or a higher one in the sense of say the higher version that you had originally before you tried the downgrade?
    (usually only hard drive downgrades are possible to some degree, but i wouldnt have thought that older versions know how to process certain changes that higher firmwares may have introduced, so was just wondering)

  • also, can i check how your msata card is working now after you got things back…is the msata ok again?

I said “screw this idea” and put 3.2.? on there and followed the firmware upgrade cycle that the GUI recommended all the way to the latest. I didn’t try inserting the disk pack in at any point, but I don’t think older firmware versions play well with the new disk packs based on what I saw.

Nope, I never got it to work sadly. Maybe it was a bad couple drives i got or maybe it’s fried down there somehow. I’m sure at some point I’ll try it again with a different brand and maybe it will magically start working again. Who knows.

Yeah, that is really not recommended. Once you go to 3.5.x you can’t go back to anything lower than 3.5.0, or it will “brick” the device (not really though, as you’ve seen it is possible to recover from it). The reason for this are changes to the kernel that allowed the 64TB volumes that we have now.

If you don’t mind me asking, why did you decide to downgrade?

My 5N appears to have no power even though the dc output from brick measures 12 volts. Out of warranty. Is there any chance I will find a fuse or something in the unit if I pull it apart as you describe?

I’m stuck with bricked Drobo 5N, just out of warranty.

But my “hacking” spirit doesn’t leave me alone :slight_smile:

I connected it via serial port (as you suggested) to see what is going on.
What it does is kernel panic with “no init found …” Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. (I’m posting full log below).

So there is now way for me to get into the console.

My guess is that this is due data corruption (power failure).

After a little bit more research I found out that there is 1GB USB storage card inside of Drobo (seen on your photos as well). I attached it to USB cable and connected in to PC where I’m now able to access files on it:

I tried replacing LxHdr, LxImage etc files with LxHdr_prev, LxImage_prev etc. but with out success. It looks both files are the same.

I also downloaded original tgz (tgf) firmware from Drobo, but I don’t know how to copy it to USB Storage card without drobo in the middle.

I was trying using DROBOM with sudo drobom -d /dev/sdb fwload release.Drobo5N.3-5-12.tdf
where /dev/sdb is path to usb storage. But just reports “No Drobos discovered"

I also tried to extract firmware (using “binwalk”) to replace files on usb storage, but unfortunately couldn’t extract it or don’t know how to (if there is any trick to it).

My main question is how to transfer firmware to this usb storage card which is connected to computer without Drobo in the middle? I think if I upload new firmware it may work again.

I would also ask if there is someone out there who would be so kind to make complete image of working storage card which could I then “upload” to my card (using dd for example)?:slight_smile:

i noticed in one log entry about a diskpack rebooting due to not being viable… i was wondering when you finish anything currently taking place, if you had tried putting your drobo into a readonly mode?

for example, once you reverse any extractions you maybe have done with the drobo, maybe it will allow you to get a bit further in the bootup process in this way, for example as mentioned here?

Thank you for the answer.

Unfortunately there is no way to access my Drobo over ethernet. Not via Dashboard nor terminal. Direct connection to computer, over router, Mac and Windows. More sadly this happened “over night” not after some firmware update.

We exchanged many emails with technical support (when it was still under the warranty), but they were suggesting same tests over and over again. I just couldn’t explain them that there is NO way to connect over ethernet and that something must be wrong on Drobo itself. I was really disappointed. It was like thay are making fool out of me. In the meanwhile warranty run out and now I am where I am.

That’s why I actually opened it in the first place.

Is there a way to put it into readmode with out dashboard?

My story is that some power failure happened and some files on card got corrupted. This could lead to "init not found " error seen in logs. If I upload new image to the card this could be fixed.

I would be very thankful if someone could somehow provide me image of that flash card or if I could send that card back for replacement. If it would help, I could also make image of mine for you to inspect.

I don’t have any drives in Drobo anymore for a long time. They are already in another NAS. So migration is not a problem. Data is lost anyway.

What I would like to do is to “unbrick” it and use it with fresh drives.
Especially as it looks the hardware is completely ok. Just the software on flash memory card is probably corrupted.

I’m thinking about buying second unit just to copy flash card and then sell it further.

I would also be prepared to pay someone to make an image of the card, so I wouldn’t need to buy second unit…

I commend you enthusiasm, but I think you went a little bit too far. Let’s go over the steps:

Before I go on, let’s stop here to give you the TL;DR version of this post: your problem is either that the boot parameters are missing, or that the Linux partition is missing. I believe the former might be the reason, since you have been replacing files on the eUSB card right and left, but you have not mentioned the additional flash storage.

The good news is that you probably don’t need to clone the USB card, although that does not mean it will be easy to fix it.

DISCLAIMER: EVERYONE ELSE, IF YOUR DROBO IS IN A SIMILAR SITUATION PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT THE FOLLOWING UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT uBOOT MEANS. SERIOUSLY, DO NOT DO THE FOLLOWING.

With that disclaimer out of the way, let’s recap what you got so far:

  1. You have a Drobo 5N
  2. You have full hardware access, including both serial consoles (I can see the Linux console, but did you get the VxWorks one as well?)
  3. You have found the eUSB card
  4. You have not found the additional flash storage, which contains the Linux root partition :wink:

Assuming you have both serial consoles, and not just the Linux one, the fact that you have seen the Linux kernel booting is great news. This means that uBoot and, generally speaking, the eUSB are fine.

What you need to do next is boot the 5N with the other serial console connected. Have a look at the output and see if it is booting correctly into VxWorks.

If so, you should be able to get into uBoot, and from there you can set the boot parameters again. PM me if you manage to get the other console’s output and the result of “printenv” (there’s sensitive information there, e.g. serial number, that you probably do not want to be made public on the web).

How can I establish serial connection to wxWorks console? Maybe via connector next to mSATA slot? Do you maybe have any suggestion about pinout?

I need to tell that logs were captured before I renamed files on flash card. Renaming was actually the only thing I changed.

I also need to mention that after kernel panic it automatically reboots after about one minute…
