and it mentions that XP service pack 3 is needed,
just wondering about that because ive got service pack 2 and it works currently. (was there something in particular that needed SP3? just wondering as i might be upgrading some drives / firmware/dashboards in case something else is needed)
SP3 is generally needed for newer versions of Dashboard to work/connect correctly

Running Win7 on my desktop, but XP on my media PC…sometimes newer is NOT better!

ive got 7 on my media pc too - windows media center is nicer in 7 IMHO and for the rest XBMC doesnt really care what its running on 
IIRC SP3 contains some stuff that newer .NET Framework needs, among other stuff.
Still, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it…
