I’m backing up my 5N with crash plan and this has worked well for several months. However recently the app has stopped running- first it needed an update then seemed to be fine. Now it stops after successfully running for some short time period (maybe a day).
Any ideas what is going on and how to keep crash plan running?
Which Java version are you running? After installing Java 8 I had nothing but issues. I had to revert mine back to Java 7 to keep Crashplan running.
I’m still running 7. I’ve reinstalled the support apps, still no progress- I’m checking the apps now daily and the problem is strange because while mostly crash plan has stopped working it sometimes still is. Always now when I restart it, the restart works. But then in a day or so it has stopped again.
Crashplan’s memory requirements go up based on the number of files and their size. Problem is that Java’s default memory limit is relatively low. Follow these instructions and see if it helps:

I have about 17TBs in Crashplan right now, and when I started hitting 3 or 4 I started running into this problem. Raised the memory max limit and haven’t had issues since.

I got the following email from CrashPlan:

Hello,
Thank you for contacting Code42 support!
It sounds like the CrashPlan backup engine is running out of memory. CrashPlan runs a resource heavy process known as data de-duplication within the app. This process uses the computer’s memory to determine if block data is unique or duplicated. CrashPlan uses more memory as the size of the data in your file selection grows.
By default CrashPlan is only allowed to access 1024 MB of memory (regardless of how much is available on the computer). When the file selection exceeds one million files and/or the archive size exceeds 1TB, this often isn’t enough.
Please follow the instructions below to allocate more memory to the CrashPlan backup engine.
CrashPlan Runs Out Of Memory And Crashes on Mac OS X
CrashPlan Runs Out Of Memory And Crashes on Windows
CrashPlan Runs Out Of Memory And Crashes on Linux / Solaris
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Regards,
~Jon
It appears the links in my email didn’t copy over, but the message here is that there is a limit to CrashPlan memory and if backing up a Drobo as I am there is a lot of data… so I’ve increased the CrashPlan memory as recommended and it appears to be backing up consistently now.
My curiosity is this: others are backing up their Drobos with CrashPlan, can I be the first to run into this?
I trust this is helpful.
Mine is running using the Drobo app, java 7 and the default memory of 1024 Mb. I’m not having any issues…yet.
