Black & Red Drives together

I currently have two Western Digital 3 TB drives in my Drobo 5D and running low on memory. I own a Western Digital black 4 TB and wondered if I could plug that one in and use it with the reds or should I buy another 3 TB red drive. I know that the Black is a higher spinning drive and wondered if that would be a problem. I am a photographer and need the best performance I can get.

I do understand that all black drives will give me the best performance but the red drives perform well and they cost me 134 for 3 TB. I could not afford to buy all Black drives.

Mixing and matching drives is one of the selling points of the Drobo Brand. Yes you can. In normal RAID’s you should never but here they do span and access drives differently.

Also You are not going to see a benefit for adding one black. The unit does not saturate the speed of the drives. I have yet to see any difference between 7200 and 5400 in a Drobo. There is a difference between with and without SSD but not difference in drives.
