Everything was fine until I upgraded my 5N firmware to 3.5.2. Now I can’t open most of the files on my 5N because there is a red minus sign on the folder icon, and when clicked, I receive a “can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents”.
I am running El Capitan. Steps I’ve taken to resolve is
Ran repair permissions using “Onyx”, and “Cocktail”
Restarted the 5N
Shutdown 5N, then restarted
Changed admin username & password to log in under a new name
At this point I am at a loss. I contacted Drobo support, and they want to change me 50.00 for assistance. This is absurd to me especially since a firmware update caused this issue. Everything was fine before the firmware update. They recommended I reach out to the “Community”, so any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
And this is what the ls-command in the terminal gives:

Here are the output from ls -la when I logged in to the Drobo via ssh - there one sees different file permissions.
Some sort of file permission repair on the Drobo is needed… https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/2295771/ssh_drobo.png
I’ve done som digging on my own while the Drobo staff keeps looking into my issue.
I’ve got a share which contains two folders, Music and backup, both are inaccessible.
Their permissions shows as drwx–S—
I looked in other shares for folders with working permissions and found they had drwxrwxrwx. So I went on a limb and ran chmod 777 on the folder called backup. Lo and behold, it started working.
I’m tempted to run sudo chmod -R 777 /mnt/DroboNAS/Shares/ but that might be a bit bold?
if you got things working, its good, though i would still check with support and mention all this (or to point the ticket to this thread as reference etc), before trying something very bold (only because once you go bold, there’s no guarantee of getting your hair back) (maybe not even with german caffein shampoo)
Have you tried managing permissions via the Drobo Dashboard -> Shares -> Share Settings? What you’re doing is making everything readable and writable by everyone. While that fixes the symptoms it doesn’t cure the illness.
When I ssh’d to the drobo and ran ls -la i noticed that working folders had -rwxrwxrwx as file permission but non-working were set do -rwx–S—
I went bold and did run sudo chmod -R 777 /mnt/DroboNAS/Shares/ while running 3.5.3 and got afp to work across all shares and folders.
Then I had the opportunity to try 3.5.5 early and did so - not seeing any problems yet.
While on 3.5.3 i noticed some apps misbehaving (at least Plex Media Server), a reinstall (after chmod 777…) made it work again.
While running 3.5.3 and prior to “chmod 777” I renamed and altered permissions on shares without luck. Not all folders in my shares were affected but I’ve gotten the suspicion that the most recently created folder were working - not older ones…but I did not confirm this - it’s just a hunch.
I’ll be more careful to upgrade the firmware in the future - aka let it pass several days and watch this forum for any input
Btw, off topic but I can’t f-n get email notifications to work in this forum. If I try to change e-mail it says “wrong password” - I’ve got the correct email address registered though, but I’ve yet to receive an email…
I’ve just installed the latest Firmware 3.5.5, and now i get an windows security error when i access the properties of all my files and click on the security tab. I get the following Windows Security message: "The permissions on (file name) are incorrectly ordered, which may cause some entries to be ineffective. I copied the file off the drobo5n on to my windows system drive and it works fine when i copy it back to the drobo5n i get the same error. I’ve created a new share and folder to place it in still the same issue. Now my plex server can’t access any of my media.
hi bobby,
maybe something with the update or locked in windows… if you power all down and reboot the drobo and computer, do you still have the same error?
Hello Paul, yes I tried powering down the drobo, and the computer, and when i bring them both back up still the same error. I was able to get Plex working again i had to drop all of the libraries and create new ones, but still same error in windows and I tried it from 3 different computers same error as well as tried it with windows, 7, 8, & 10, same error. I didn’t’ have this error before the update.
hi bobby, it’s good that plex can access your files again. im not sure about the windows properties issue, though it might be worth checking how the 5n is being mounted, just in case a remount/rename of the share to something else and back, works?
