3Tb drives coming from Seagate and WD

The tech press is popping with stories that (in Europe) Seagate and Western Digital are beginning the process of offering 3Tb drives. Seagate’s is a 7200 RPM Barracuda, WD’s is a 5400 RPM Caviar Green.

At the rate I’m filling my Drobo S, I’m hoping these things are qualified for use in Drobos before I have to go from two-drive redundancy to single-drive redundancy. I really don’t want to do that. But remembering what a mess the 4K sector drives made under Drobo’s old firmware, I’m not going to be the first one in the water, either.

There are already two other threads about this, I don’t think we need a third

Hi Mr. Protoocol,
I’m interested to find out how’s ur DroboS is being connected to ur host. Windows PC or Apple? Snow or Tiger?
If u r one of the few individuals on the Windows side, then pls share w/ us which eSATA controller or PC/Server U r using.
I’m having nothing but problems w/ the DroboS except USB! I’ve tried Adaptec, IOGear, no name brand (SI chip based) PCI-e and the hi-end Areca Marvel chip based eSATA controller and none of them worked on my DroboS. So, I’m using it w/ USB now & surprisingly stable.

Sorry, my Drobo S oscillates between a Mac Mini (USB 2.0) and a Mac Pro (FW 800). So, no help to you.

I spent a lot on many different cards as well, but finally found the Sonnet Tech E2P found in the KB that works the best in both Windows and OS X (10.5 & 10.6)

DRI has released Firmware 2.1.0 for 3 TB drive support for the DroboS units. http://drobo.com/support/updates.php
