2 Pro's on a switch

Hi all,

I’m a long time DroboPro user and never had a problem up until today. We’ve bought a client 2 of the units to connect together with a Mac Mini using a Gigabit switch.

Trouble is the Mini won’t see either of the Pro’s, whether they’re static IP or DHCP.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Andy

what trouble shooting have you tried?

can the mac see each DP individually when they are directly connected to it - without the switch?

Are some of the units using jumbo frames and some not? If you are using jumbo frames, does the switch handle them properly?

Have U tried Port#3261?

Hi,

They both work fine connected via FireWire or USB. When I say a switch, it’s actually a hub. I have my personal Drobo connected via iSCSI and this configuration has been solid so I would feel more comfortable with the 2 Pro’s at the clients being on a small network.

Thanks,

Andy

Have U tried to direct attach the DP to the mac one after another? If the mac sees both units, then likely it’s a port issue. Doesn’t matter u r using a swithc or hub for connectivity but obviously not performance & congestion or I should say collistion.

Hi,

Neither work with iSCSI although my personal one does.

Andy

I’ve never seen a Gigabit hub before, though I have seen hub-like switches (not having full switching fabric).

So if your personal Drobo Pro works on the same Macs and hub/switch, then it definitely points to the configuration of (new) Drobo Pros.

What is your personal Drobo Pro using IP-wise compared to the new Drobo Pros?

I have two DroboPro’s connected via iSCSI through a switch to a Mac Mini. No issues with discovery. I do see the DroboPro drop offline occasionally but that problem started with Lion. I’m using this Netgear switch.

I’m using the GS108T switch as well, but a couple version older. I only have 1 DroboPro, but I’ve setup a port based VLAN for it and my iMac, because it only got 1 ethernet port, to separate it from the rest of the network. It’s been stable and stays connected all the time. I’ve had 1-2 disconnects due to Lion upgrade 2 weeks ago, but for the past week it’s been very stable.

Interesting, I wonder if it works on this because the switch is a bit more intelligent than a hub? Would you consider this to be a ‘managed’ switch?[hr]

Thanks for the reply, they are all using Auto Discovery so I assume the the DP’s are on the 169.254.x.x subnet. I have also tried with a manual IP address with no luck.

Not directed at me but FYI: I hardcode my DP’s on the same network as everything else via USB then move then to iSCSI.

I agree with aluff - Auto-Discovery is, well, not optimal in my experience.

I see you already tried manual, but also check any firewall.

I’m running two Drobo Pro’s as well.

Here is how mine are set up and working.

One is connected to the secondary port on my Mac Pro. Ip address is manually set on the ethernet interface along with a subnet mask. Drobo Pro connected to that port is also a static IP with the same subnet.

Number two is connected to the same switch that primary port of the Mac Pro is connected to. Primary port of Mac Pro is static IP with subnet mask and second Drobo Pro is also static IP with same subnet.

My server is behind a hardware firewall so the local software firewall is disabled.

No issues to report.
